The Manitoba Association of Basketball Officials (MABO) is pleased to share details on a new initiative identifying a referee using a blue whistle is new to officiating and gaining experience in the role.

Through its new “Blue Is New” message, MABO is drawing attention to officials who are learning the game from a new perspective. The blue whistle serves as a visible reminder that referees, like players, develop their skills through experience.

MABO is asking the basketball community to give new officials the patience, respect and encouragement they need as they learn. Fans, coaches and players can support that development by recognizing the learning process and contributing to a respectful and encouraging environment during games.
