You see it all the time in NBA, WNBA and College level. A player pivots then lifts up their pivot foot, stepping through and releasing the ball before their feet touch the ground again. Also, I believe it is referred to as an "up and under." But is this a travel? It seems you see it all the time called at the youth level.

A: It is hard to give a comment without a video. The normal step through play would not be a Travel as once a pivot is established you can jump off that foot with as long you release the ball for a shoot or pass.

The FIBA rule is 25.2.1

To pass or shoot for a goal, the player may jump off a pivot foot, but neither foot may be returned to the court before the ball is released from the hand(s)
Basketball Manitobahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00395669740979637988noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2109639640184482537.post-63972551847899382722024-02-12T09:19:00.003-06:002024-02-12T09:19:36.690-06:00Call a Foul on Cancer This February with Manitoba Basketball Officials and the Pink Whistle Campaign

Join the Manitoba Association of Basketball Officials as they step up to the challenge in the battle against cancer during the inspiring Pink Whistle Campaign! There are the regular jab steps, pivoting and rip-through. But regarding the rip through. If done unintentionally and the defender is basically chest to chest with the offensive player, and the offensive player sweeps the ball through, and the ball itself makes contact with the defensive player's arms, hand, body, etc., is that an offensive foul or a no-call?

A: If the defensive player is in a legal guarding position and inside their cylinder, and if the offensive player uses the ball to displace the defensive player, it would be deemed an offensive foul.

The FIBA Rule states... (Rule is Article 32)

"The offensive player with the ball must be allowed enough space for a normal basketball play within his/her cylinder. The normal basketball play includes starting a dribble, pivoting, shooting and passing."

The other thing that you need to know is that the forearms can't be horizontal as this is not a basketball play, but they can be vertical as long as they are inside their cylinders.
Basketball Manitobahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00395669740979637988noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2109639640184482537.post-28664814052168364262024-01-23T09:38:00.002-06:002024-01-23T09:38:59.719-06:00FINAL REMINDER: MABO Provincial Championships Application Now Available - Deadline to Apply Wed Jan 31

Suddenly, on January 1, Ross passed away at his home. He left behind his wife, Linda, who he credited with keeping him alive as long as she did, son Michael, and daughter Laura.

Ross was involved in basketball his whole life, from high school through many years in the Senior Men's Leagues and was a long-time member of the MBOA. He was a gifted scorer, a committed player, and a committed coach who gave back to his community. A serious and conscientious referee for over 30 years, Ross was one of the first KPAC officials when that organization was founded.

Ross was approached by the Interlake and Evergreen School Divisions to come out and referee their games as they recognized the need for serious officials if their teams were to succeed at Provincial competitions. He promised to supply them with quality officials as long as he was involved. The number of Provincial banners that hang from these schools are testament to this approach.

Ross retired from officiating when COVID-19 started. When basketball started after the pandemic eased, Teulon Collegiate had a special presentation before a home game thanking Ross for his 34 years of service. It was the only time he was at a loss for words.

His smile and dry sense of humour will be missed. Our thoughts are with Ross' family and friends.
Basketball Manitobahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00395669740979637988noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2109639640184482537.post-71693333686415893802023-11-30T19:32:00.000-06:002023-11-30T19:32:04.946-06:00REMINDER: MABO Gear Store Open to Dec 3

The sale closing date is December 3 at 11:59 p.m. Please note any late orders will not be accepted to ensure delivery deadlines are met. Charlie was well-known as one of Manitoba's top basketball officials. He began his refereeing career in 1970 and was still doing games well into the 2000s.

He was the assignor for all Winnipeg Conference High School and Senior Filipino League games for many years. As the leader of the WBOA (Winnipeg Basketball Officials Association) for 15 years, he helped recruit, develop, and mentor many young officials. He refereed in every Winnipeg Invitational Tournament (WIT) from its inception in 1974 to the 25th anniversary, where he was honoured as the Guest of Honour. Charlie refereed in 14 MHSAA Provincial Basketball Championships and earned the final game nine times. In 2000, he received the prestigious Mike Spack Award, which is presented to an individual who has made significant contributions to the growth and development of basketball in Manitoba over a sustained period.

Charlie was a major contributor to the sport of basketball and other sports. He was a very gifted athlete who gave back to sports in a selfless manner. He will be greatly missed on a sport level, but more so in the countless ways he influenced others as a teacher, principal, church mentor and Harvest Manitoba volunteer.

Overall, Charlie was truly a good guy who contributed a lot and will be missed. Our sincerest sympathies are extended to his wife, Melody, and his entire family. His funeral will be held at their church, Faith Lutheran, in the coming days.

VIEW OBITUARY
Basketball Manitobahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00395669740979637988noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2109639640184482537.post-63616484208602124082023-08-08T09:47:00.004-05:002023-08-08T09:47:34.181-05:00MABO Officials Active at National and World Basketball Events

Although the sport of basketball and MABO are in the slower months of the year, we have a number of our officials representing MABO this summer in a variety of events.

Please join us in congratulating the following...

Canada Basketball National Championships

Carriera Lamoureux - Crew Chief Gold Medal Game - 17U Girls Nationals in Alberta

Ryan Wiebe - Gold Medal Game - U17 Gold Medal Game - 17U Boys Nationals in Quebec

Rizzle Munoz - 15U Girls Crew Chief, Consolation Final and Gold Medal Stand by

World Police and Firefighters Games in Winnipeg

5x5 Basketball Officials

Wyatt Anders

Anne Smith

Shawn Woloski

Justin Bradbury

Stew Brown

Phil Sam

Earl Roberts

Steven Goldstein

Jason Glowaski

Paul Isaac

Cyril Duenas

Ron Guinto

Patricia Rodrigues

Darren Patkau

Wayne Elias

Stan Majowski

Craig Holowachuk

Kyle Kushiner

3x3 Basketball Officials

Anne Smith

Min Lee

Shawn Woloski

Ben Szymkow

Stew Brown

Basketball Manitobahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00395669740979637988noreply@blogger.com
