FIBA Rule Interpretation: Undershirts
Wednesday, 04 February 2009
The wearing of undergarments under the playing uniform has stirred some confusion in different areas of the country. The following is a clarification of the issue. One of the changes in the FIBA rules for 2008 was the deletion of the permission to wear a T-shirt under the game jersey when warranted by medical recommendation. Therefore, the wearing of a T-shirt specifically is no longer permissible under any circumstances according to the FIBA rules.  However, in many areas of Canada, at lower levels of play and especially when girls are involved in the game, uniforms sometimes are not properly fitted and may be a source of embarrassment. Canada Basketball and CABO have therefore established that the wearing of the T-shirt should not be forbidden at levels up to and including high school across the country.  At all levels of play, it is not illegal for a player to wear an undershirt of which only a small part is visible at the neckline of the jersey.

MABO Remembers Two Officials
Saturday, 08 November 2008

The Manitoba Association of Basketball Officials and the basketball community as a whole, have recently suffered the loss of two of it's officials...Scott Norris and Cyrus Lister.

On September 30, 2008, Scott Norris passed away at the age of 43.  Scott's passion throughout life was football and basketball.  His love of basketball allowed him to referee games at all levels for many years. Scott was a member of the WWAC Officials Association and a member of the Metropolitan Basketball Officials Association (MBOA).  He was also heavily involved as a coach with Football Manitoba's Provincial Team Program.  For those that wish, donations can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, Manitoba Heart and Lung Association or a trust fund for his stepson Christopher that is being set up at the Sanford Credit Union, Box 147, 7 Mellow Street, Sanford, Manitoba, R0G 2J0.  The MABO family extends it's sincere condolences to the Norris family...our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

On November 5, 2008, Cyrus Lister passed away after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer.  Cyrus spent his final days surrounded by friends and passed peacefully with his wife and family by his side.  Cyrus was a member of the SCAC Officials Association and President of the Metropolitan Basketball Officials Association      (MBOA).  As his obituary so eloquently expressed, times spent with Cyrus were special - always filled with learning, love and adventure.  Cyrus had an impact on the lives of many and his memory will guide us forever.  As Cyrus would say Life is Beautiful!  For those that wish, donations be made to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation at cbcf.org.  The MABO family extends it's sincere condolences to the Lister family...our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

Welcome to a new season with MABO!

FIBA Approves Historic Rule Changes
Tuesday, 06 May 2008
GENEVA (FIBA) – The FIBA Central Board, the highest executive body of the International Basketball Federation, met Friday 25th April and Saturday 26th April, in Beijing, China. The Central Board has taken some major and historic decisions as with regards to the game rules. Upon recommendation of the FIBA Technical Commission (a group of experts that deal with the game rules), the FIBA Central Board has approved today several amendments to the Official Basketball Rules. The recommendations by the FIBA Technical Commission and the decisions taken by the Central Board were strived by the attempt to further unify all existing game rules and to have, in the future, only one set of rules for the game of basketball worldwide. Please find below a summary of all approved rule changes, which include historic amendments like the extension of the 3-point line (in place since 1984) and the change of the trapezoid restricted area (in place since the 1950s) to a rectangular one:
